July News: More Visible Safety Leadership: Adapting For The Future

Newsletter Safety Culture Safety Leadership Success Stories

Retaining staff and maintaining a safe and mentally fit work environment for workers means organisations must continually understand and respond to the needs of not only the organisation, but also their people. Often the issues that senior leaders feel they must act on are disconnected from the needs of their teams.

In the previous 12 months, the Health and Safety Index benchmark data found a shift in leadership behaviours:

  • Lower levels of visible leadership
  • Reduction in active worker participation
  • Mismatch between frontline operator and senior management perception.

Findings were published in the Safety Solutions Safety Leadership industry publication. In this blog article, explore changes in leadership behaviour, benchmark data and provide tips for improvement and director due diligence considerations.

Assurance – 4th Line of Defence

Assurance can come from many sources. The ‘four lines of defence’ model is a concept for helping to identify and understand the different contributions the various sources can provide.

This approach is referenced by the International Compliance Association, Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales, and International Financial Stability Institute.

The ‘four lines of defence’ model is essentially the same as the ‘three lines of defence’ model, but adds in a fourth line, i.e. external assurances provided by the external assessors, regulators and other external bodies.

Ventia Safety Leadership

Last week Terry Swanton, Director of Fefo Consulting successfully completed a Safety Leadership session in Townsville with Ventia’s frontline supervisors.

This helped workers self-reflect on their own leadership styles, provided practical tips to be effective leaders, and build a high-performance culture!
