SafeWork Data Released

SafeWork Australia: Managing psychosocial hazards at work

In September 2022, SafeWork Australia released resources relating to psychosocial risk including the 4 steps to prevention.

SafeWork Australia states that on average 7,984 Australians are compensated for work related mental health conditions each year and that psychological injuries have longer recovery time, higher claim costs and more time away from work.

Key findings from the Safe Work Australia report 2021 support this as:

  • Average Lost time per claim is 4 times higher for mental health conditions than physical injuries  – 30.7 working weeks vs 6.2 working weeks
  • Mental health conditions account for a small but increasing proportion of serious claims, rising from 6% in 2014-15 to 9% in 2020-21

The Health and Safety Index recently launched 2 new products:

  • Wellbeing dx: Psychosocial, cognitive, financial and physical health
  • Psychosocial dx: Organisational factors, social factors, work environment and work activity

These 2 new products complement our existing Health and Safety Index and provide more specific insights in relation to wellbeing and psychosocial hazards within an organisation.
