Enabling a High-Performance Safety Culture: BSA Ltd Improvements 2022 vs 2023

Health & Wellbeing Success Stories

The Health and Safety Index is utilized by several organizations to report on performance with credible and reliable benchmarks. BSA Ltd has deployed the Health and Safety Index for three consecutive years and reports results in their Annual Report, disclosing results to the Australian Stock Exchange (ASX) and their shareholders.

The Challenge:

BSA Ltd faced several challenges to improve health, safety, and operational excellence. The Health and Safety Index was utilised to inform strategic areas of focus and make decisions on where to focus attention.

The Solution:

BSA Ltd used the Health and Safety Index to obtain feedback at scale and seek areas for improvement. Survey results were included with Board and senior management discussions on how to improve health and safety culture. Examples of intervention included:

  • Development of a tailored Safety Leadership Pathway program with competencies and skills required to drive a high-performing culture of their leadership team.
  • Leadership visibility with targeted discussion on improvements that matter.
  • Focus on high-risk activity and topics that were relevant to frontline operations.

The Outcome:

  • Employee engagement increase        ↑ 9%
  • Safety engagement increase              ↑11%
  • Safety leadership increase                  ↑10%
  • Health & wellbeing increase               ↑10%
  • Safety systems increase                      ↑14%

As a result, BSA Ltd was able to obtain relevant feedback from stakeholders not only to increase employee engagement but also materially shift health and safety scores.

Our goal throughout FY2023 will be to improve our Health and Safety Index score whilst continually developing our safety excellence. BSA has commenced the development of a tailored Safety Leadership Pathway program with competencies and skills required to drive a high-performing culture of our leadership team.
